GSD Names Karenna Gore 2024 Class Day Speaker
The MDE program combines GSD methods of analysis, visualization, conceptual inquiry, and open-ended exploration with the rigor and quantitative power of the engineering disciplines at SEAS to address problems far beyond traditional design and engineering fields. Our faculty and students navigate multiple disciplines and fields when setting out to investigate problems, ask better questions, and build novel, real-world solutions. Harvard University and the Graduate School of Design aspire to provide education and scholarship of the highest quality—to advance the frontiers of knowledge and to prepare individuals for life, work, and leadership. Achieving these aims depends on the efforts of thousands of faculty, students, and staff across the University. Some of us make our contribution by engaging directly in teaching, learning, and research, others of us, by supporting and enabling those core activities in essential ways.

Fast evolving social, environmental, and economic conditions in cities and metropolitan areas are precipitating the need for new skills and knowledge. On top of the customary pressures of making real estate succeed are the impacts of climate change, demands for equitable development, changing home-work arrangements, on-line consumerism, and global flows of capital. Many real estate investors and developers are applying sustainability, social impact, or environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria as new metrics for performance. Regulatory agencies are moving to require that developers and owners demonstrate that their projects account for environmental factors. The provision of socially desirable public benefits such as affordable housing is becoming a common requirement of local development approval.

The MDE program prepares innovators who operate both creatively and analytically, think strategically, and collaborate broadly. The concurrent degree program allows you to pursue degrees at HKS and at a partner school; however, the coursework is not as closely integrated as the joint degree program. As a concurrent degree student, you are responsible for weaving together the two halves of your learning experience. You might consider pursuing a second degree jointly or concurrently if you’re interested in how the world’s challenges can be addressed at the intersection of public policy and business, law, medicine, design, or other fields. While it isn’t a formal requirement, most MPP students take on a policy-oriented internship during the summer after the first year.

Then in 1994, the Urban Planning program was officially returned to the Graduate School of Design under the aegis of Albert Carnesale, the Dean of the Kennedy School of Government, and Peter G. Rowe, the Dean of the Faculty of Design; with the first class entering in academic year 1994–1995. In 2021, the Department of Urban Planning and Design assumed responsibility for a third graduate degree, the Master in Real Estate[10] (MRE). MRE students also benefit from being part of one of the largest design schools in the world, with close to 200 faculty members and 900 graduate students.
